Firstly, what is Intellectual Capital (IC) and why is it important?

For both Edvinsson and Malone in their 1997 paper, IC encompasses an organization’s structural capital (organizational systems and processes, business processes, and software and databases), human capital (experience, skills, competence, and innovative workers), relational capital (linking all the organization’s resources to the external relationships with stakeholders like customers, investors, suppliers, and creditors, among others), process capital, and innovation capital.

Intellectual Capital comprises all company knowledge, and if left unprotected can be exposed to theft and infringement, diluting the brand capital of your enterprise. Did you know that up to 90% of all company valuations is held in your intellectual property? This is the reality for Startups, SMEs to large-scale MNCs and even certain Government Enterprises.

"Microsoft’s book value (total assets minus total liabilities) on March 31, 2001, was $54.3 billion. This included $1.4 billion in goodwill and $277 million in intangible assets (IAs). Its market capitalization (number of outstanding shares multiplied by stock price), however, amounted to approximately $301 billion. Subtracting the net book value and that of reported intangible assets results in a staggering figure of $248.4 billion. If we agree that this is the value of Microsoft’s intellectual capital, then it makes 82.4% of the company’s total assets."
